CBD and Cancer: What you need to know.

In 2016, there were approximately 15.5 million cancer survivors in USA. This number is expected to increase to almost 20.3 million by 2026. Statistics show that around 38.4% of people will be diagnosed with cancer at one point in their lives. With research being done every day on the treatments for cancer, a lot of new treatments come up. Research has shown a strong connection between cancer and CBD.

What Is CBD?

CBD or Cannabidiol is a natural chemical compound that is gaining a lot of popularity due to its many health benefits. It is a compound found in the Cannabis savita, which is a hemp plant and is being used in products like oils and edibles to give a feeling of calmness and relaxation. It is a phytocannabinoid that helps to stimulate the regulation of the central nervous system. It is not psychoactive, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

CBD for Cancer Prevention

The NCI (National Cancer Institute) reviewed a lot of studies to see what link there is between CBD and cancer and they found some significant results. The compound suppresses the growth of cancer cells and promotes their destruction. Despite having said that, a lot of research still needs to be done in this arena to further probe into the connection.

Research shows that there CBD cannot be used as a cure for cancer, but it can significantly reduce the chances of getting this deadly disease. In 2016, researchers found that the use of CBD can help in the fight against cancer. A study done in 2015 showed that there was a significant relationship between CBD and bladder cancer. After taking into account other factors too, it was seen that people who used CBD has a 45% lower risk of developing bladder cancer.

Research also shows that CBD can effectively help reduce cancer related symptoms like vomiting, pain and nausea. CBD can also help reduce nausea and vomiting that is chemotherapy induced. Other side effects of chemotherapy can also be controlled to quite an extent by using CBD. Though there are drugs available that help with these symptoms, they are sometimes ineffective and don’t give desired effects. CBD is a very natural way to fight off these symptoms.

Further probing into this arena reveals that high usage of CBD can decrease as well as increase levels of different drug metabolizing enzymes, better known as CYP’s, which can change the effectiveness of a pharmaceutical. At further large doses, CBD can also modify the expression of some proteins produced by cancers to resist chemo therapy. Testing on mice shows that CBD can prevent neuropathy that is caused by the chemotherapy paclitaxel.

To sum it all up, it can effectively be said that CBD only helps with cancer related problems. However, a lot of further research is needed in this field.
